Majlis Seating Guide: How to Plan a Majlis That Actually Gets Used
Quick answer
Plan 60–70 cm of seating width per guest and 65–75 cm of seat depth for a majlis. A U-shape seats the most people in a defined room; an L-shape suits narrower rooms and doubles as family seating.
Choose performance fabric or top-grain leather, foam density of 35 kg/m³ or above, and a seat height of 40–42 cm. These three specifications matter more than the style of the frame.

What a majlis is actually for
In most Emirati and long-resident households, the majlis is a room with a job: receiving guests, often in groups, often at short notice, often for several hours. That single fact should drive every decision — capacity first, then comfort over time, then style.
It is also the room where furniture gets mis-specified most often. A beautiful low sofa that seats four looks elegant and empty on a Thursday evening with fourteen people arriving.
How many guests will it really seat?
Use 60–70 cm of seating width per adult. That is tighter than a living-room sofa calculation, because majlis seating is upright and guests sit closer.
| Room size | Typical layout | Comfortable capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 4 m | L-shape along two walls | 8–10 guests |
| 5 × 4 m | U-shape on three sides | 12–14 guests |
| 6 × 5 m | U-shape plus occasional chairs | 16–20 guests |
| 7 × 6 m or larger | Two facing runs, or two seating groups | 20+ guests |
Leave a clear centre of at least 1.8 × 1.2 m for trays, coffee service and movement. If the centre is smaller than that, the room will feel full before the guests arrive.
Seat height, depth and back angle
- Seat height: 40–42 cm. Lower feels informal and is harder for older guests to leave.
- Seat depth: 65–75 cm. Deeper than a living-room sofa, because guests sit upright rather than reclining.
- Back height: 75–90 cm. High enough to lean back, low enough to keep sightlines across the room.
- Armrests: useful at the ends of a run, unnecessary in the middle.
- Cushion firmness: medium-firm. Soft foam collapses within a year of heavy hosting.
If the majlis also serves as a family sitting room, consider a slightly deeper seat (75 cm) and a softer back — but keep the seat height where it is.
Layout patterns and when to use them
U-shape
The default for formal majlis. Three sides of seating facing a centre, with the open side at the entrance. Best for rooms of 5 × 4 m and above, and for households that host regularly.
L-shape
Better for narrow rooms and for majlis that double as everyday living space. It leaves one long wall free for a console, a display cabinet or a TV.
Two facing runs
Works in very long rooms. It creates a formal, conversational arrangement but needs a wide centre — at least 2.2 m — or it feels like a corridor.
Materials that survive ten years of guests
Majlis seating takes more wear per square metre than any other furniture in the house: continuous sittings, coffee cups, children, and air conditioning running for months.
| Component | Specification to ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Upholstery | Performance fabric (rub count 30,000+) or top-grain leather | Resists pilling and staining; leather wipes clean |
| Foam | 35 kg/m³ density or above, high-resilience | Holds shape under daily use |
| Frame | Kiln-dried hardwood, corner-blocked | Prevents squeaks and sagging |
| Suspension | Sinuous springs or webbing rated for contract use | Keeps the seat from bottoming out |
| Legs | Solid wood or powder-coated metal | Survives mopping and humidity |
Ask for the foam density and the fabric rub count in writing. Suppliers who cannot provide them are usually guessing.
The details guests notice
- Side tables every 1.2–1.5 m along a run — a tray needs somewhere to land.
- Lighting at 2.2–2.6 m, warm (2700–3000K), dimmable. Overhead downlights alone make the room feel like a lobby.
- Floor cushions or low stools for overflow seating, stored out of sight.
- A clear path from the entrance to the furthest seat — no furniture in the walking line.
- Fabric that does not show every mark: mid-tone, textured weaves hide more than flat cream.
Common mistakes
- Counting seats on the frame instead of on the cushion width.
- Buying low, deep, soft seating that looks luxurious and is difficult for older guests.
- Leaving no centre space for trays and service.
- Choosing a light flat-weave fabric in a room used daily.
- Forgetting that the majlis needs storage — for cushions, trays and the extra chairs.
Frequently asked questions
How much seating width should I allow per person in a majlis?
60–70 cm per adult. For a 4-metre run, that is five to six guests comfortably, not eight.
What is the right seat height for majlis seating?
40–42 cm. It is high enough for older guests to stand up easily and still feels formal.
Is leather or fabric better for a majlis?
Leather is easier to wipe and ages well in air-conditioned rooms, but it can feel cold and shows scratches. Performance fabric is warmer, quieter and more forgiving for large groups. Both work if the quality is right.
Can a majlis double as a family living room?
Yes. Choose an L-shape, add a TV wall on the open side, and specify a slightly softer back. Keep the seat height at 40–42 cm.
How long should a custom majlis take to arrive in the UAE?
Custom seating typically takes 30–45 business days including production and sea freight. Order before handover, not after.
