Dining Table Size Guide: How Many Seats Actually Fit Your UAE Home
Quick answer
Allow 60 cm of table edge per adult, plus 15 cm at each end for a rectangular table. That makes a 160 cm table a comfortable four-seater, 180–200 cm a six-seater, and 240–260 cm an eight-seater.
Then add 90 cm of clear floor around every side you want chairs on. If the room cannot give you that, choose a smaller table, an extendable one, or a round table — not narrower chairs.

The two numbers that decide everything
Table length sets how many people sit; clearance sets whether they can get up. Most dining rooms in Dubai apartments are 3.0–3.6 m wide and double as a walkway to the kitchen, so clearance is usually the constraint, not length.
Plan 45 cm of depth per setting (place mat, plate, glass), 60 cm of edge length per adult, and 90 cm from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture so a chair can be pulled out and walked behind. If you only ever need to pull the chair out — not walk behind it — 75 cm is workable.
How many seats fit each table size
| Table size | Comfortable seats | Tight seats | Best room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 × 80 cm (square) | 2 | 4 (elbows touch) | Studio, breakfast corner, balcony |
| 120 × 80 cm | 4 | 4 | 1-bedroom apartment, kitchen-adjacent |
| 140 × 80 cm | 4 | 6 | 1–2 bedroom apartment |
| 160 × 90 cm | 4 | 6 | 2-bedroom apartment, the safe default |
| 180 × 90 cm | 6 | 6–8 | 2-bedroom, small villa dining area |
| 200 × 100 cm | 6 | 8 | Villa dining room |
| 240 × 100 cm | 8 | 10 | Villa, formal dining, guest season |
| Ø 120 cm round | 4 | 5 | Square-ish rooms, tight corners |
| Ø 150 cm round | 6 | 7 | Villas, majlis-adjacent dining |
Round tables buy you corner clearance: a Ø150 cm round table seats six in the footprint of a 150 × 150 cm square, and nobody sits at a corner. In apartments where the dining table sits between the kitchen and the living room, round is usually the better compromise.
Rectangular, round, or extendable
- Rectangular: best against a wall, best for 6+, most efficient per square metre of room.
- Round: best for circulation, best for 4–6, worst for a wall-hugging layout.
- Oval: reads softer in a majlis-adjacent room, but needs the same clearance as rectangular.
- Extendable: the practical answer for UAE guest season — 140 cm day to day, 180–220 cm when family arrives.
If you host for Eid, Ramadan iftar or family visits, an extendable table is almost always the right call. You get apartment-sized daily living and villa-sized hosting, and you only pay for the floor space once.
Height, legroom and the details people forget
Standard dining height is 75 cm to the table top, with a 45 cm seat height. A 5 cm variation between table and chairs is fine; 10 cm starts to feel wrong after a long meal. Sintered stone tops (common in UAE homes for heat and stain resistance) sit on a frame, so check the apron depth — thick aprons steal knee room.
Also check the delivery route before you commit to a 260 cm table. Service lifts in Dubai towers are often 1.2 × 1.5 m with an 80–90 cm door, so long tables frequently arrive as two halves or come up the stairwell. Ask for the packed dimensions, not the assembled ones.
Five mistakes we see in Dubai dining rooms
- Buying chairs first, then discovering the table they need does not fit the room.
- Forgetting the walkway: a table against the kitchen door looks fine on the plan and blocks it in real life.
- Choosing a bench for a family with young children — no back support, and everyone slides.
- Putting a 240 cm table in a 3.0 m room because it seats eight, then never seating eight.
- Ignoring the pendant light position: the table must centre under it, not wherever the wall allows.
The fix for all five is the same: tape the footprint, including the 90 cm chair zone, and walk the room for a day before you order. If the tape feels tight at 8 a.m., it will feel tighter at Eid.
Frequently asked questions
What size dining table fits a Dubai apartment?
A 140–160 cm rectangular table suits most 1–2 bedroom apartments and seats four comfortably, six tightly. Keep 90 cm clear on the sides where people sit.
How many people can sit at a 180 cm table?
Six comfortably. Eight only if you accept 45–50 cm per person and no end settings.
Is a round or rectangular dining table better for a small room?
Round, if the room is square-ish and has a walkway on two or more sides. Rectangular, if the table must sit against a wall.
How much space do I need behind dining chairs?
90 cm from table edge to wall for walking behind a pulled-out chair; 75 cm if the chair only needs to pull out and the person steps sideways.
